EYFS FAQs

Admissions

How do I apply for Nursery?

You can find the application form on our website, or you can collect an application form from the school office. We manage Nursery admissions internally.

How do I apply for Reception?

This is done via the local authority or on the gov.uk website. Leeds LA manage all school admissions for Green Lane and the deadline for Reception places is usually mid-January. You can find details of priorities on our admissions policy on our website.

How many places are there across the unit?

We have a 52 place Nursery and 60 places in Reception.

How do you decide who goes in each class?

Staff consider parental requests during home visits or transition events. We also try to split classes up fairly based on need and an equal balance of boys and girls where possible.

Is the place guaranteed in Reception if they come through Nursery?

No. If children have a Nursery place, you must still apply through the local authority for a Reception place.

Staffing

How many staff are there in Nursery?

We are always within the legal ratio of 1:13. There is always a qualified teacher and a Nursery Nurse. We then have an additional EYFS Practitioner who supports when numbers exceed 26. We have a maximum of 39 places and offer 30 hours or 15 hours (start of the week or end of the week).

How many staff are there in Reception?

We are always within legal ratios and have one qualified teacher and one teaching assistant for each class of 30 children. We are a 2-form entry so can take up to 60 children.

The School Day

What does a typical day look like in Nursery?

Children have 2 short morning carpet session and the time surrounding this is for play based learning in the provision areas. There is then a break for lunch. Children eat lunch in Nursery. In an afternoon there are a further 2 carpet sessions and additional time to explore provision areas. Staff facilitate play and also have some specific tasks based on takeaways. Each day there is a phonics carpet session, maths and literacy. We also have snack time and sing nursery rhymes each day. We have a dedicated Storytime every day.

What does a typical day look like in Reception?

Children enter school and complete an ELS phonics lesson first thing. They have a mid-morning snack and then an additional carpet session before lunch. This is usually maths focused. They have one hour for lunch where they eat in the hall and play on the big playground. In an afternoon there is an additional carpet session linked to literacy and then they do a handwriting session mid-way through the afternoon. There is a final carpet session at the end of the day which is sometimes music, Spanish, Understanding the World and Thrive. The children have extended period of time where they can play and explore the provision areas between the carpet sessions. Adults carry out both specific focused tasks with individuals or groups and also support child-initiated play.

How much time is there to play in Nursery?

Children have around 3.5 hours to play each day. This is both indoors and outdoors.

How much time is there to play in Reception?

Children have around 2.5 – 3 hours to play within the classroom provisions and have about 40 minutes to play outside on the big playground at lunchtime.

How much time are they on the carpet for?

This varies throughout the year and the length of time increases slightly throughout the year. At the start of the year carpet sessions are very short (only a few minutes). As we progress towards the end of the year we build them up to around 10 minutes. Within this time there are lots of opportunities for children to be actively participating.

Do you do PE in Reception?

Yes. We have a weekly PE lesson in the school hall in both Nursery and Reception. The class teachers deliver these lessons.

Do they get changed for PE?

In Nursery – no. In Reception – yes. Children require a PE kit which consists of black shorts, a white t-shirt and some PE pumps or trainers.

Out of School Provisions

Do you offer extra-curricular activities?

We do not currently have any clubs for EYFS.

Do you offer wraparound care?

We do not offer wraparound care as a school, however, Garforth Kids Club (Contact Us) is based on our site and there are also a number of childminders who cover Green Lane and offer this service. Information on available childminders can be found by following this link: Find a registered childminder – GOV.UK .

Food and Snacks

Do you hep children open their packed lunch?

Children are always supervised by a paediatric first aid trained member of staff whilst eating and the adults will support with opening and packing of lunchboxes.

Do you provide a snack?

Yes. A fruit based snack and carton of milk is offered to every child each day as part of snack time.

Toileting

Do children have to be toilet trained to start in Nursery?

No, but it is helpful if children are as we encourage and support independence. There is also one adult for every 13 children.

Do children have to be toilet trained to start in Reception?

No, but it is helpful if children are starting to develop independence in this self-care area. School staff will support children in this journey.

Do you support toilet training?

Yes. Staff are well-equipped to support with this. We ask parents to send in a bag of spare clothes so that children can have their own things on in the event of an accident.

Do you help wipe/clean in the toilets?

We would aim to support children verbally through this process to promote independence and respect children’s privacy. If a child is struggling, adults will intervene as and when required.

Others

What year are you in when formal teaching begins?

In EYFS (Nursery and Reception) children follow ‘Development Matters’ and have whole class teaching input. As children enter Year 1, this is when they begin on the National Curriculum.

Do they go on the big playground?

Not in Nursery, but in Reception, children spend their lunchtime play on the big playground with KS1 pupils. This is usually around 40 – 45 minutes.

What can I do to help get them ready for starting school?

working on toilet hygiene such as wiping themselves, flushing the toilet afterwards and washing their hands independently. Being able to put their own coat on and take it off. Please practise zipping their coat up too. Taking their shoes on and off (please consider this when purchasing school shoes). Help them to recognise their own name.
