It was quite a night on Tuesday as East Garforth Primary hosted the Year 5/6 girls football tournament. We took two teams this year which was fantastic! Both teams played some excellent football and each match they played they were competitive in. Lots of good attacking and defending was on show throughout the evening!
The A team progressed to the final against St. Benedicts after beating Strawberry Fields in the semis. A closely fought contest saw the girls grab a late equaliser thanks to Affy McF two minutes from the end. The match then went to extra-time and it stayed 1-1. That meant, you’ve guessed it, penalties. Evie M did a brilliant job in goal but truly remarkably BOTH teams missed all of their four penalties. The decision was made that, as nothing could separate the teams, the trophy would be shared.
It was a genuine delight to take the Year 5/6 girls squad to this event. Their attitude, behaviour and sporting spirit was impeccable and they were a huge credit to Green Lane. I was very proud of each one of them. Thanks to Mr Maw and Mrs Hector for their support of this event.
Here is what the girls thought of the evening:
Molly W – “I liked that we got to go against different teams!”
Megan I – “I liked the competition best when we scored!”
Lola N – “It was good. I enjoyed it!”
Mila J – “It was a good experience!”
Jess B – “Although it was tough I still had a good time!”
Karlie – “It was good and I got more experience!”
Evie M – (shoot out keeper) “I was so glad they kept missing them but then I was sad we kept missing them as well!”
Lily W – “It was good because I got to improve my football skills and see girls from other schools!”
Amarah M – “I enjoyed it. It was really fun because I enjoyed playing with my teammates.”
